He was born in Belgian. In 1889 he immigrated the the USA hoping for better career opportunities. In 1907 he was working as independent chemist when by accident he discovered the compound of carbolic acid and formaldehyde. When he tried to reheat the solidified compound he discovered it would not melt no matter how high the temperature.

Shortly after he trademarked "Bakelite" as well as two other variations "catalin" and "marblette" which today are also referred to as bakelite.
Bakelite was the first synthetic plastic. Because of its durability and beauty its uses were simply endless, it grew in popularity very quickly and within 15 years it had taken the world by storm. You could find everything from electrical plugs, to ornate jewelry made from bakelite. It was even used on the dashboard face of the Mercedes Benz car.

It could be produced in a wide array of colors, but most common where white, brown, green and red. Bakelite dating back to the 1920s-1940's has oxidized and developed a wonderful patina that is sometime a completely different hue than the original color. For example, White is often seen as butterscotch, light blue changes to forest green, pink turns to orange.

Because of this invention, Dr Beakeland is seen as the father of the present plastic industry. The costume jewelry from the 1920's-1940's bakelite era is highly sought after. So how do you determine if it is actually made of bakelite? There are a couple of fairly simple tests. Although not full proof they work pretty well.
Smell - When bakelite is heated it has a very strong odor which comes from the carbolic acid in the composition. On some pieces you can release the smell simply by rubbing them hard with your thumb and creating heat. Others will need very hot water to release the odor. Still on others the odor is so faint you may not detect it.
Sound - When you tap two bakelite pieces together they will make a deep clunking sound, rather than the higher pitched clack of acrylic or Lucite plastics. This test is the most unreliable as it is difficult to interpret the sound because the density of the items affects the sound you hear.
Hot Pin Test - Bakelite is a thermoset plastic so it cannot be remolded with heat. To test if a piece is bakelite get a very very hot pin from an open flame source, then touch the pin to the item. If it is bakelite it will not penetrate. It may give off the acid smell and it may leave a purple burn mark. If the pin penetrates or melts the plastic then it is not bakelite. Use caution when doing this test as it can devalue the bakelite piece considerable, and it may do serious damage to other types of plastic should the piece turn out not to be bakelite. If you proceed with this test be sure to find a very inconspicuous spot. Also if the material should be celluloid, it is very flammable and can be very dangerous. If you suspect the piece may be celluloid I recommend you "do not" conduct this test. When ever you are conducting this test you should wear the appropriate safety equipment such as eye goggles and gloves.
Formula 409 or Scrubbing Bubbles or Simichrome - this product works very well to test whether an item is bakelite. Make sure the item is clean, wet the end of a Q-tip with Formula 409 then touch it to the piece. If the Q-tip turns yellow then the piece is bakelite. If you believe a piece is bakelite but it doesn't pass the 409 test don't count it out. Sometimes polished bakelite will not react or pass the test.

The best way to recognize bakelite comes with experience. After you've seen enough pieces you will easily recognize it. There are also some excellent books on the market that you might find helpful.
 BAKELITE JEWELRY - Tony Grasso
THE BEST OF BAKELITE AND OTHER PALSTIC JEWELRY - Dee Battle & Alayne Lesser
BAKELITE JEWELRY GOOD*BETTER*BEST - Donna Wassertrom & Leslie Pina

Bakelite has always been known as the material with 1000 uses, and it surely did earn this name. Bakelite is now treasured for its unique, unreproducible beauty. When the Bakelite patent expired in 1927, it was acquired by the Catalin Corporation that same year. They began mass production under the name "Catalin. The Catalin Corporation was responsible for nearly 70% of all phenolic resins that exist today.

Bakelite-Catalin was sold mainly to companies like Saks Fifth Avenue, Bonwit Teller, Woolworth's, and Sears. Much of the wealthy society fell into touch times during the depression and could not longer afford the Tiffany diamonds or Cartier Jewelry. Bakelite-Catalin took up the market slack with its colorful carved jewelry adorned with rhinestones. This jewelry was within the reach of all and its popularity grew from the poorest to the wealthiest in society.

In 1942 Bakelite-Catalin stopped sales of their colorful costume jewelry in order to concentrate on the nation's wartime needs. They produced thousands of products found their way into the military.

By the end of the war new technologies were for molded plastics had been developed. These new products consisted of plastics such as Lucite, Fiberglass, Vinyl, and Acrylic all which were molded. Bakelite and Catalin become obsolete except in the hearts of collectors who still pursue it today.

© Copyright Sher Matsen, All Rights Reserved.

About the author:
Sher has been serving customers for over 20 years, providing affordable estate jewelry, and a wealth of information on jewelry, fashion, designers, and beauty with on staff industry professionals. The hotel opened in 1923, and was for many years the home of the Academy Awards, honoring those that were the best in newest technology of the time - movies.

The Millennium Biltmore is more like a Romanesque museum than a hotel, located in the heart of the business and financial district. If it were a wax museum, there would be likenesses of many of its famous guests, such as Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter, Gerald Ford, John F. Kennedy, Harry Truman, Bill Clinton, Queen Elizabeth, Princess Margaret, The Duke of Kent, Eleanor Roosevelt, Howard Hughes, J. Paul Getty, John Wayne, Casey Stengel, Barbara Streisand, Placido Domingo, and the Beatles.

When entering on Fifth Street the Galleria Room serves as a grand promenade, running the entire length of the hotel. The Main Galleria connects with the South Galleria and the Biltmore Bowl (home of the Academy Awards, complete with the original stage), the Regency and Heinbergen Rooms are also offshoots of the Galleria; the Health Club and the Grand Avenue Sports Bar are accessed by a connecting parquet corridor. The Lobby, Gift Shops, Gallery Bar, and guest room elevators also open on to the main Galleria.

A focal point for the hotel is the lobby, serving as the main entrance from the port-cochere from Grand Avenue. The concierge desk has a commanding presence for arranging tours, restaurants or dinner theater packages. The lobby is always the busiest area of any hotel, but I think I could actually sleep in the Millennium Biltmore's lobby. The colorful rugs and deep sinking and plush and velvety lounge chairs are masterpieces of craftsmanship. Marble lion sculptures surround a tinkling fountain, adding to a refreshing ambience as world travelers rush in and away from the reception desk. JFK's 1960 West Coast campaign headquarters were in the Music Room, which is now the lobby. Many of the guests lounging around are the beautiful Malaysian Airlines flight attendants who make the hotel their stopover home.

The 11-story Millennium Biltmore was designed by the New York architectural firm of Schultze and Weaver, which also designed the Waldorf Astoria and Park Lane Hotels in New York City. The Spanish Italianate Renaissance hotel was completed in 1923 and declared a Historical Cultural Landmark in 1969.

It is believed that the name Biltmore was suggested by Cornelius Vanderbilt, a friend of John McEntire Bowman, president of the Biltmore Company who coined the name for the family estate in North Carolina. Bowman also developed other Biltmore's in the USA and Cuba.

Touted as the "Host of the Coast", the Biltmore was the home of high society, and film czars and stars. The founding banquet of the Academy Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences was held here on May 27, 1927, where the concept and design of the "Oscar" was revealed. A statue was sketched on a napkin in the Crystal Ballroom marking the occasion.

The 1937 Academy Awards dinner in the Biltmore Bowl.
Can you spot Cecil B. DeMille, Roy Disney, Tyrone Power,
Henry Fonda, Spencer Tracey, and other stars?

The original Biltmore Bowl caught fire in the 1990s, but a $3 million renovation blends state-of-the-art audiovisual equipment while maintaining period detail. On a visit with the Food and Beverage Manager I was warned about the ghosts: "One of our employees reported seeing a waiter in attire that we have not been using for fifty years." One of the two original escalators still works, bringing new passengers into a more stately era. With plush and quieting carpets the Biltmore Bowl is redesigned for a wide range of groups, including performers and music executives who celebrate with after-parties of the Grammy Awards. The Biltmore Bowl's modern enhancements include 75 audio speakers, video and computer projection, programmable lighting, theatrical lighting, and gold leaf ceilings, wood columns, and bright colorful carpets.

During the Big Band era famous composers, bands, and musicians performed at tea parties, dances, and parties in the Ballroom. But the Crystal Ballroom still retains its former glory and it is the hotel's pride and joy; dance on hardwood floors under Austrian chandeliers and cathedral-like 30-foot ceilings that were hand-painted by Italian artist Giovanni Smeraldi of White House and Vatican fame; one of the hotel's restaurants is named after the artist. Glittering mirrors and draperies enhance this beautiful, festive room, still offering romantic, cozy balconies. In 1977 Bob Hope was the Master of Ceremonies for the Academy's 50th anniversary in the Crystal Ballroom.

I am surprised on how hilly downtown Los Angeles is. A short walk around the hotel finds me puffing for air and thinking of a subdued version of San Francisco. I am within walking distance or short cab ride to West Coast culture, including the Ahmanson Theater, California Science Center, Chinatown, Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, El Pueblo de Los Angeles, the Flower Market, the Garment District, Hollywood Bowl, Hollywood Walk of Fame, Japanese American National Museum, The Jewelry District, Little Tokyo, LA Zoo, Mark Taper Forum, Museum of Contemporary Art, Our Lady Queen of Angels Cathedral, and the LA County Museum. The new Walt Disney Concert Hall is not far away, the home to the Los Angeles Philharmonic. A beautiful LA County library is right across the street on Grand Avenue.

The Biltmore's Sports Bar is rated the best downtown by locals, so I can not leave out nearby sporting venues, such as the Brookside Golf Course, Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, and the Staples Center, home of the Lakers. The Sports Bar offers happy hour specials and Sierra Nevada pitchers for under $11. Try snappy sounding drinks such as the Two Point Conversion, The Grand Slam, A Day At The Ball Park, or the upbeat Cheerleader.

For more elegant apertifs and drinks try the hotel's Gallery Bar and Cognac Room, near the lobby, an elegant lounge offering fine wine, exclusive liqueurs, and signature drinks, such as the Black Dahlia. The Black Dahlia Martini is named after actress Elizabeth Short who disappeared after she was last seen catching a cab by a doorman at the Biltmore in 1947. She was later found murdered, unsolved to this day.

The Black Dahlia was invented by Greg Guzelian, the hotel's winner of the award, "Downtown's Bartender Of The Year" in 2003. The $14 Black Dahlia is comprised of Citron Vodka, Kahlua, and Chambord, and the result is a purple brown drink that tastes like chocolate. It is served in a martini glass with an orange rind. Phone the Gallery Bar, at 213/624-1011 to find out about the jazz artists that play Thursday and Saturday nights.

With striking elegance and grand ambience the dining choices at the Millennium Biltmore are a mlange of culinary delights.

Sai Sai, the famous Janapense restaurant, has a Peruvian Chef, Ricardo Zarate, who specializes in Japanese cuisine, even throughout his Latin America career. Enjoy the small plates and pan fried oysters with jalapeo chilies and Shishito peppers with tomato salsa and lemon dressing, or his Ceviche with orange panzu coriander juice and yuzu dressing. Or try the kaki shihito - a single deep fried Kumamato oyster dressed in the shell, with tomato yuzu salsa and charred Shishito pepper. Sai Sai lunch and dinner menus feature popular dishes, including sushi, sashimi, Robata grill, tempuras, Kobe beef, shellfish, and vegetarian dishes, and infused South American pan fried oysters. Dinner for two runs about $65. Sai Sai is open Monday thru Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., and for dinner Monday thru Saturday from 6-10 p.m. Sai Sai reservations: 213/624 1100.

Smeraldi's Restaurant is where I dined for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and it offers a more California - style cuisine in a casual atmosphere that suits my every need. The two level restaurant is a splash of glowing gold and frescos and painted clouds on the high carved wooden ceilings. The Mediterranean tile floors are bright. I had the dining rights to the floor-to-ceiling window seat on the upper level for evening dinner so that I could watch the famous LA dusk descend over Grand Avenue and Pershing Square across the street. A vintage menu from the hotel's archives is featured monthly at Smeraldi's. I opted for the lighter fare of Salmon Salad, grilled to perfection, with baby greens, cucumber, tomatoes, avocado, and roasted shallot and balsamic vinaigrette. My waiter, from Mexico, has been serving hotel guests for over 25 years. I was the only diner in the restaurant, but it soon fills up with artists, writers, and loyal locals. But you have heard that color contact lenses might cause problems? Here we will discuss how color contacts can affect the health of your eyes, and give you simple tips to follow so your color lenses never give you any troubles.

There are two main reasons why color contacts cause your eye problems, and both are easily avoidable. The first cause is buying color contacts of inferior quality without a doctor's prescription; and the second is not caring properly for your color lenses.

Sometimes you see color contacts for sale in beauty salons and even in flea markets! You should never buy your lenses in these places. Color contacts aren't fashion jewelry: most paints are very toxic, so the lenses should be properly manufactured, to avoid direct contact between the paint and the sensitive surface of your eye. Most color lenses sold without a doctor's prescription fail to meet these requirements. They might look good and cost less than brand-name color contacts, but they are really dangerous for your eyes.

Since the second common cause of eye infections from wearing color lenses is not caring for them properly, you should always follow your doctor's instructions about caring for your lenses.

Color contact lenses safety rules

If you follow these simple rules, your lenses will be no threat to the health of your eyes.

1.Obtain an eye doctor's prescription before ordering your color contacts. Even if you don't need vision correction, you need an eye doctor to select the lenses that would be best for you

2.It is cheaper to order your color contacts online than buying them from your doctor, but make sure that you order from a reputable contact lens retailer

3.Don't wear your color contacts continuously for too long. Most color contacts block the flow of oxygen to your eyes. This is usually not a problem, though, if you wear your lenses only for 8-9 hours at a stretch, but any longer than that could cause problems.

4.Never sleep wearing your lenses - this is the most dangerous thing you can do, in terms of eye health. If your eyes don't receive enough oxygen for days on end, then you are sure to suffer inflammation of the corneas. Some color contacts, like Acuvue 2 Colors, are FDA approved to wear for up to 7 days straight. However, many eye doctors agree that it is better not to risk your eyes even with the best quality color contacts

5.Don't swim or shower wearing your color lenses. Firstly, it is very easy to lose a lens in the water. Secondly, whenever water gets into your eyes it creates favorable conditions for bacteria, putting you at risk of infection

6.Make sure you clean your lenses properly, and always keep your contacts in soft contact lens solution. You shouldn't rub your color contacts while cleaning them, because it may damage the color. So it is best to use a no-rub multipurpose solution.

7.Never share your color contacts with other people. It might be very tempting to exchange color lenses with a friend but, unfortunately, it is a sure way to pick up an eye infection.

Color contact lenses are fun. As the saying goes, "The eyes are the mirror of the soul", and it is amazing how much different eye colors can transform your appearance. Caring for your color lenses isn't hard work - people who wear color contacts every day report that it takes them less than a minute to clean the lenses and put them in - so you should always follow the safety rules. If you do, then color contact lenses will bring you only joy, with no troubles.

Tanya Turner is a contact lens and eye health expert and a founder of www.1-contact-lenses-consumer-guide.com/, where you can find unbiased information about all types of contact lenses including color contacts reviews and pictures

Beads-A Sign of the Times?
MJ Plaster

When you hear the word "beads," do you immediately think of jewelry? Or do you think of Rosary beads or some other non-jewelry use of beads-beaded dresses, headbands, belts? Perhaps you think of a country and western outfit, a studded, head-to-toe piece of jewelry.

The first thought that enters your mind when you hear the word "beads" may date you and give away your age faster than physical attributes. If you're a product of the 50's, your mind may wander to pop beads, those plastic pull apart, pop together baubles that have risen in value from pennies to $20, $30 or more. If you're a product of the 60's, you may think of "love beads," which complemented the long-haired, unkempt look, or your mind may wander to the long strands of beads that once adorned inside doorways in Haight Ashbury with sounds of The Mamas and the Papas blaring in the background. Thanks to television, it's difficult to forget the beaded belts of the 70s.

From Ancient Trade to Modern Computer Applications

Beads predate the mid-20th century by eons. Remember the abacus? Of course, you can't actually remember back 2000 years unless you possess powers unknown to this author, but you can remember learning about the abacus in school. In Europe, Venetian glass beads and German metal beads served as currency in trade as early as the 16th century. Beads also played a central role in Native American jewelry.

Bohemia (aptly named) was the center of the European bead trade from as far back as the Middle Ages. Through the twists and turns of history, bead making moved to Bavaria and now, has once again found its home in the Chezk Republic, in the Bohemia area, home of Swarovski Austrian crystals.

In 1990, Native American traditional beadwork intersected with computer sciences. Several college campuses introduced a pilot program in which beadwork shaped the foundation for courses AutoCad and other design program courses for Native American students. The popularity and applicability of these courses continues today.

Modern Beads

Now that we've strolled down memory lane and taken a quick look at vintage beads, beads no longer in production, where do beads fit into today's jewelry scene? They're everywhere you look from casual chokers and necklaces to fine Swarovski Austrian crystal designs.

Think beyond a single strand of beads. Start by thinking of a single strand of beads from which a pendant dangles. From there, think pins-yes, pins adorned with beads, beaded bracelets, barrettes, earrings, etc. In fact, think beyond jewelry to purses and other accessories. If you look closely at your surroundings, you'll find beads everywhere.

The Many Faces of Beads

Another thing that you might rethink is the composition and shape of beads. Today's beads come in a myriad of shapes and materials, with Austrian crystal topping the list. Today's look du jour of transparent, translucent and iridescent beads don the bodies of the rich and famous along with everyday mortals. Venetian glass beads often encapsulate swirls within the beads for a unique, timeless quality.

The latest in fashion trends includes little beaded silk purses. This will give you the coolness of a natural fabric without the wrinkles. Choose jackets with sleeves. They are cooler than full sleeves and more professional looking than short sleeves. Light and bright colors works well in warm weather but do not use loud bold color combinations and prints. Dress in layers to adjust to the high heat outside / air conditioning inside temperature changes you will experience. A sleeve jacket over a sleeveless shell or a summer twin set is are excellent solutions for temperature changes. A cool alternative to pantyhose are thigh - highs they allow air to circulate better then pantyhose and will keep you cooler. Wear slightly larger jewelry it will give you a more polished look. Instead of a simple pendant on a chain try a triple strand of pearls. Avoid plunging necklines, extremely short hemlines, sheer fabrics, cloth handbags and briefcases, open toe shoes, sandals and flip flops.

Make - Up

Opt for a lighter make-up routine. Heavy make-up in high heat can clog pores and lead to breakouts. Before applying your makeup rub an ice cube over your face. It will help makeup last longer and prevent smudging. Use waterproof cosmetics. After applying your makeup brush your face with face powder it will set your makeup and prevent shine.

Hair

Wear your hair in a simple flattering yet professional style. Hair grows faster in warmer months so be sure to have your hair trimmed every 4 to 6 weeks. With hot weather comes limp and frizzy hair. To correct this problem use only hair products designed specifically to treat your hair type and problem. If you pull your hair back be sure to use only quality accessories. Avoid using plastic clips and rubber bands they will detract from your professional image

Eileen Hammel President of Smarter Image, and Smart Skin Care - Smart Cosmetics by Smarter Image is a Nationally & Internationally Recognized Image, Style and Beauty Expert. http://www.smartskincaresmartcosmetics.com/

Silversea Cruises! Everyone is good at something but they don't know how to cash in on their knowledge. You may think what you know is of no value but you're wrong! You would be surprised to find out how many people are earning a comfortable income on seemingly trivial subjects.

Find Your Niche

You've heard it before but it bears repeating. Why? Because it works! The key is to be happy doing what you enjoy and what you're good at, and then build your online business based on those factors. If you don't enjoy the subject, you will bore of it quickly and it will seem like any other job. You will be learning more as you go, so make it interesting. Find something people are attracted to or something that solves a problem.

Are you good at services? Many services can easily be transferred to an online business as well. Putting up a website and announcing what you have to offer can get you more sales than you can imagine. Display samples of your work if possible. Testimonials from satisfied customers are crucial. If you must, do some work for free in exchange for testimonials.

Try writing an e-book containing all you have learned on a certain subject and put it up for sale on your website. Then start an affiliate program to increase sales. For example, did you just buy a car? "How to Shop for a New or Used Car Without Being Cheated" can be valuable to other people in the market for a car. Most will be willing to pay for the information in order to save money in the long run. If you haven't bought a new or used car but will be doing it soon, research the topic extensively, buy your car, and write your e-book!

If you're the artistic type, making homemade jewelry, blankets, and craft items could be the thing for you. If you have been doing this already then you have a start. Put these items up for sale on your website or auction them off. It's not as difficult as it sounds. Many people make it a full time job going to rummage and estate sales, then selling their goods for a hefty profit.

Have a Business Plan

First of all, make a list of all the goods or services you want to provide. This can be a short list that you can add to later. Know who your potential customers are and how you will reach them.

Know what your goals are and don't get sidetracked until you're satisfied in your accomplishments, then you can move on to the next. Too many projects going on will leave another area lacking. Learn step by step and stay with the plan.

Set up a budget and stick to it. This will include any materials, software, web hosting, and marketing. When setting this up, do research on what is available and how much it will cost. Where else but online can you set up a business for such little cost?

Burn the Midnight Oil

If you're working now, don't quit your day job just yet. It takes time and patience to establish an online presence and you still need your job to pay the bills and any expenses your online business incurs. Keep learning about things you're interested in so when your first business takes off, you can open up another and create multiple streams of income.

With every new avenue of income, you gain security. If the market changes and one venture isn't earning you the income it used to, then you will have another to fall back on. Keep updated on trends current and marketing. These rapidly change. What's hot and what works one day may be outdated and ineffective the next.

Don't Give Up

Your internet business will start off slow so have patience. If you stick with your plan and nurture it, you will begin earning trust from the online community and the money will start coming in. Don't be afraid of failing, everyone has that fear when they just start out and not everything works. It's NOT taking any action that will get you nowhere.

Lorene Radenz is the owner of http://www.ibizedge.com Your All-In-One Resource Guide for Online Business, providing ideas, resources and webmaster tools for entrepreneurs.

Get the bling without the sting - affordable engagement rings

Alex Miller

Just because you don't have a lot of money doesn't mean you can't find an affordable engagement ring that looks like it cost a fortune.

Tips on getting more diamond for your dollar when choosing an affordable engagement ring

First, the diamond shape you choose can help make your ring look like it's worth a lot more than you really paid. A marquise-shaped diamond, for example, looks larger than a round diamond. Pear-shaped and oval-shaped diamonds are also good choices for diamond engagement rings because they look larger than their round counterpart.

The setting you choose can also make your engagement ring look very glitzy and expensive. In particular, an Illusion setting. The diamond is mounted on a metal plate similar to a mirror, which makes the diamond appear bigger and more brilliant.

The quality of the diamond you choose is also important if you want an affordable engagement ring. Your personal preference will prevail, but it's possible to sacrifice quality for size. Colored diamonds are a popular choice, so one possibility is to opt for a lower grade color to get more diamond for your dollar.

Where to look for an affordable engagement ring

Why go past the World Wide Web? Crank up the computer and browse online, it's the easiest, most pain-free way to find a great affordable engagement ring that's not going to break the bank.

Of course, who can go past e-Bay for a bargain-priced affordable engagement ring? The place to go BEFORE you shop for jewelry online.

Why You Need A Display Case
Antigone Arthur

Why You Need A Display Case

Some people are under the impression you need to own a retail shop to have a display case. While commercial display cases (like commercial pet display cases) are popular, many people often have one in their home. Why? Most of us have valuables stashed away somewhere in our homes.

These may include coin collections, doll collections, antiques, rifles, knives, military paraphernalia and more. Unfortunately many of us also have a habit of piling these items in trunks, storage or boxes in the basement. Now, that isn't a very nice way to show off your collectibles is it? In fact, it is the perfect way to help them collect dust.

Collectibles and Cases

There are many reasons to have a display case in your home. The most important reason is to show off your collectibles. In fact, the most common reason people own display cases in there home is to show off valuables and other collectibles. Fortunately there are hundreds of display cases you can choose from to display your favorite memorabilia.

Think you have to invest too much time and energy to do so? Think again! Setting up a display case is easy, and inexpensive when you know what to look for. The first thing you'll need to decide is the kind of display case you want. There are many to choose from. Many people opt for a specialty display case.

These include:

Die cast or car display cases

Flag display cases (military flag burial cases)

Football jersey display cases (and other sports memorabilia)

Jewelry display cases

Sword display cases (and knife cases)

Wooden display cases

Bakery display cases

You can even have a custom display case made if you own a valuable and unique item you want to display. Of course, you may not want to put all the collectibles you have at your home on display. Chances are however you have at least one family heirloom or prized possession you have considered showing off more than one time. This is the kind of item you need a display for.

Deciding The Right Spot for Your Display

Not sure where to put your display? No problem! Almost any place is better than the basement or your closet. Many people decide the dining room is the best place for their display. This is very much the case if you have China or other fine or delicate items to display. The den or game room however, may be a better selection if you plan to display your favorite sports memorabilia. Likewise, the living room may be a good place to show off your favorite rifle collection or swords. Truly, where you set your display depends on how many people you plan to show it off to.

In some cases, your kitchen or bedroom may even be the right place for a display. If you plan on displaying some cherished wards or other private mementos, you may decide you prefer to have them by your bedside. The key here is to think about where you want your display before you go and buy one. This will help you decide the right size, style and shape for your display. You can then select the style you want to match the room you plan to show your items off in.

Remember, putting your collectibles on display is far more interesting than bundling them in the closet. There is a reason you collected each item you have, after all. Your guests and family members will enjoy coming over and marveling at your ingenuity and motivation once you do get your items on display. Why not enlist the help of family and friends? You can literally throw a display making party. Get out all the objects you want to show off, then have friend's help you pick out just the right display. You can then have them over again to set up your cherished display case!

Remember, setting up a display case doesn't have to take a lot of time and energy. It can be fun and exciting. You'll pat yourself on the back for a job well done once you are through.

Antigone Arthur is a successful writer providing informative articles on such topics as commercial pet display cases, diecast car display cases and flag display cases.

Spiritual Meanings of Gemstones and Native American folklore

Tarl Michael

Through out human history every thing imaginable on earth and in the skys has been associated with a spiritual meaning and that includes gemstones.

At Bearlanders Trading Co. we ship our merchandise with a spiritual meaning card. It is possible to have several totems and these totems can change as we change throughout life.

Every animal on earth is sacred, revered or has spiritual meaning in one culture or another. The custom of offering and exchanging engagement rings and wedding bands is a time honored tradition rich in symbolism and meaning that has been carried on for centuries.

As time has changed so have consumer traditions and buying patterns. The rich tradition of exchanging vows as a symbol of love and devotion is still a traditional time honored ritual practiced in many cultures. Certain aspects of engagement and marriage have changed with time however. Whereas in times of old a couple might take several outings together in search of the perfect engagement rings or wedding bands, in modern times more and more couples are buying engagement rings, wedding rings and wedding bands online. Thanks to the internet and the resulting access to a global marketplace, couples are realizing they have more options available to them all from the comforts of their living room. Some couples are even going to the extreme, not only buying engagement rings, wedding rings and wedding bands online, but also purchasing wedding gowns, flowers and even participating in virtual marriages.

How have these changes come about? What can today's modern couple expect when planning a walk down the aisle?

The Engagement Ring

The practice of a groom offering his bride to be an engagement ring as a promise of love and affection began nearly 2 centuries ago in the United States; many associate the giving of engagement rings with a need to express implied commitment and understanding forever. The term "A Diamond is Forever" was in fact used as a means of reinforcing the notion that an engagement ring is a commitment from one fiancé to another to live a life together in marital harmony forever. The phrase is also a popular advertising catch phrase that reinforces the notion that love and devotion are part of everyday symbolisms that require an outlet for expression.

The use of engagement rings as a token of love and affection is a norm that instilled in the hearts and minds of most people, in part due to heavy marketing and advertising from diamond ring and other jewelry manufacturers, and in part based on the needs of mankind to project symbolism into everyday living.

Wedding Rings

Once a couple has decided to walk down the aisle together, the next step is often purchasing wedding rings together. Because there are so many different kinds to choose from, it helps to know what distinguishes one wedding band from another. There are several tips that you can follow to ensure that you purchase wedding bands that suit your individual preferences and budget.

First and foremost consumers should keep in mind that it certainly pays to do their homework. The best advice for wedding ring shoppers is patience. Couples should take the time to shop around and look at several different wedding bands, and have in mind an idea of what exactly they are looking for. Far too often customers compromise because they feel they can't find exactly what they are looking for; chances are you can find what you are looking for at a reasonable price, if you give yourself plenty of time to research wedding rings thoroughly before purchasing.

An article in Today's Summer Bride in Summer of 1989 suggested that consumers be patient and shop wisely, but also have faith that they will find what they are looking for. The article was referring to purchase of a wedding gown, but buying wedding rings follows the same logic. You probably didn't bump into your partner overnight, and likewise you should expect it to take some time to find the perfect wedding rings as symbols of your love and devotion to one another.

Marriage represents a commitment and shared love between two people. Wedding ceremonies are often shrouded in symbolism, among the most significant of which is the exchange of wedding rings between husband and wife.

Buying Engagement Rings, Wedding Rings and Wedding Bands Online

Society is ever changing, and with the advent of technology and access to a global marketplace, more and more consumers are buying engagement rings, wedding rings and wedding bands online rather than shopping for these ritual symbols of devotion in a traditional store. Buying online affords consumers the luxury of perusing the widest selection of rings available from the convenience of their home.

Some people have infused the process of buying engagement rings, wedding rings and wedding bands online with romanticism. New rituals and traditions are being built in the face of modern technology. In fact, some couples are planning entire wedding ceremonies through their computers. A virtual ceremony can be broadcast to friends and family members the world over!

What advice can we offer the couple interested in shopping for wedding accessories online? Here are some suggestions for a successful venture:

Keep an open mind. Know what type of engagement rings (diamond, gemstone, bands) or wedding rings you are looking for, but consider looking at many different varieties. You may change your mind about what type of ring best symbolizes your relationship and love.

Make shopping online romantic! Place some candles around the computer, turn on your song and have some wine! Buying engagement rings, wedding rings and wedding bands online can be just as fun and exciting as buying them in person... and even more fun when you create a loving and warm atmosphere.

Be prepared to spend a fair amount of time perusing different styles and makes. There are an incredible variety of engagement rings and wedding bands available: titanium, platinum, white gold, traditional gold, silver, gemstone, diamond... the list goes on and on. Once you have reviewed a fair number of styles be sure to compile a list of your favorites to narrow down your search.

Know your size! Nothing is more obnoxious than having to have a ring re-sized before you wear it. There are several websites that offer jewelry sizing online. Typically women wear between a size 5-9 and men between sizes 8-12. The average for men: a 10; the average for women: a 7.

A Symbol of Your Love and Devotion

Ritual symbols such as the exchange of engagement rings and wedding rings are time honored traditions that will likely continue through the next two centuries. Though the manner in which people shop and commit themselves to one another is changing, the time honored tradition of exchanging vows and bands as a symbol of love and devotion will not likely change in the near future.

Take advantage of modern technology, and consider buying engagement rings, wedding rings and wedding bands online. You'd be surprised the variety available, and pleasantly surprised by how exciting it can be shopping from the comforts of your living room, office, or bedroom...

Antigone Arthur is an award-winning author and freelance writer providing consumer information on such topics as wedding rings, engagement ring design and diamond wedding rings.

How to Make Your Hobby A Paying Homebased Business

Loring Windblad

Copyright 2004 by http://www.organicgreens.us and Loring Windblad. It's even more exciting to have a specialty in one of these fields that no one else has, and then to turn your special talents into a successful home-based business. It's gratifying indeed to be able to take two or more of these and combine them into a paying proposition.

That's exactly what Loring Windblad of Sierra Vista, AZ, did.

But these aren't isolated stories. Men and women across the country are joining the ranks of entrepreneurs converting hobbies into moneymaking propositions. It's important to note that none of these women originally planned to start a business. On the contrary, interest by others in their hobbies convinced them to sell their work.

LORING WINDBLAD'S CUSTOM-BUILT COMPUTER BUSINESS

Loring Windblad spent 20 years in the US Army in Electronics, and retired from that position on January 1st, 1976. But in the course of those 20 years additional skills were picked up including teaching (electronics), typing (over 100 wpm), general writing and technical writing (electronics and communications, lesson plans, etc), photography and even SCUBA diving.

Years and miles later (read on below, also) found Loring in Canada playing in a major bridge tournament but also renewing acquaintance with his first love, whom he met in 1952. Strange things happened and they got married in June of 1990 and began their own business in July of 1990. The business took on a form of its own, evolving from humble beginnings into a Desktop Publishing and Graphic Design endeavor by September, when they purchased their own computer - and landed their first big job starting October 1st.

That same Friday night, September 30th, was portentous in several ways. Loring played his baseball games for his computer baseball league and then shut the computer down at midnight and went to bed. When the computer was turned on at 8 am to start the new job, nothing happened. Dead. No computer working. Obviously a dead power supply? No? Actually yes. The computer was two weeks old, under total warranty, but nothing could be done warranty wise over the weekend. So Loring called around to every computer business in the area and found one open on a Saturday morning, drove there, found a power supply that looked exactly like the one in the computer at home, made a deal to "rent it" for a week until a replacement could be gotten on warranty, took it home and put it in the computer.

It worked! The job began, a few hours late but on the day it was supposed to begin. And a new career was launched, even though we didn't know it at the time.

Calling upon his 20 years of experience plus lots of long talks with the Custom Computer Builder who had sold them their first computer, Loring slowly learned about computers and how to build them. Then, in 1992, a friend of a friend wanted a new computer. Loring "custom built" a computer for him, a brand new 486 CPU "screamer" type. The client was well satisfied. Time passed. Friends later in the year wanted computers, so Loring built them new computers. By 1994 Loring was building 5-6 custom computers a month, most months, in the "high profit" days of computers when they paid $400 or more profit per computer.

One of the biggest things was finding wholesale suppliers for a new computer builder to purchase quality components from. With a little help from their original computer salesman, i.e., making careful notes on everything he told them, June and Loring developed a list of possible suppliers, then applied for re-seller status. And sure, there were periods when no computers were sold as well as months when 6-8 were sold. It was obviously a struggle, but a good one.

Networking became a way of life. June joined all the women's networking groups and Loring joined all the missed networking groups. Both made presentations and work came in, both desktop publishing and new computers. From 1995 to 1998 Loring sold an average of 25-30 computers a year. However, by 1998 the profit margin was falling out of computers, the days of $400 were gone. By 1999 the margin was down to $100 a computer and when you are servicing a computer for 3 years warranty service on a total of $100 it starts getting pretty old pretty quick.

The sales kept up for a while, but by 2001 new technology, low profits and pending retirement for June and Loring caused a re-think of priorities. By the end of 2002 building custom computers was a thing of the past and a new era of life - retirement - was upon us. But the trip to and through building computers has been a fascinating one.

LORING WINDBLAD'S PHOTOGRAPHY VENTURE

Way back when Loring first met June he learned that June knew how to not only take pictures but to develop and print those pictures in her basement darkroom. Never one to take a back seat when he could be learning something new, when Loring a few years later went to Vietnam in the Army he took up photography, including learning how to develop and print his photographs. This was 1965 to 1967. And in 1966 Loring helped to establish and run the unit photo hobby shop in Vietnam.

When Loring returned to the US he became an electronics instructor at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, and he quickly made contact with the Post Photo Hobby Shop and got a part time job, thus learning more about photography for himself but also helping to teach others the fine art of photography.

Loring's next posting was to Panama where he continued with the local Post Photo Hobby Shop as a Photo and Color Printing Instructor for 2 years, and also picking up work as a free-lance photographer. Loring soon began photographing such things as kids visiting with Santa, then developing and printing and delivering the photos, Then action work such as youth Karate matches, Pop Warner football games, Little League baseball games, and both team and individual photos. And, of course, weddings. All these photo endeavors paid surprisingly well, and Loring was soon not only very busy but making enough money to more than support his photography needs. And teaching helped keep Loring up with everything in the photography field so soon everyone with a question about cameras and photography was coming to him.

Being around military bases there was always opportunity for youth sporting event photography. And wedding photography. From 1970 thru about 1977 Loring did a pretty brisk business in photography, made a lot of friends and took a lot of pictures. And made a pretty good "extra income" that not only paid for all his cameras and supplies but provided a lot of extra money supplementing his income.

But it was hard work and long hours and Loring's son, silver smithing and rockhounding were getting in the way. The transition was made leaving photography behind and embracing a new business - jewelry making and silver smithing.

LORING WINDBLAD'S SILVER-SMITHING BONANZA

Loring was always a rock collector. This gave him an eye for rocks that were different everywhere he went. As a soldier in the US Army he managed to live in France for four years, Panama for five years, and Southeast Asia (Vietnam) for 2 years, as well as extensive periods from coast to coast across the United States including California, Georgia, New Jersey, Kansas and Arizona.

Loring was divorced while he was in Vietnam when his son was three. Eight years later, in August of 1975, his ex- called and said, "I can't handle your son any more. You've got to take him!" Without getting into gory details-."Well, ok", and his son came to Arizona to live with him.

Loring, Jr., was an excellent artist and got straight A's in art in school. He was now in a new environment and Windy, as a way of keeping his son's interest up in the arts and new things, began taking Jr. and his friends out on camping and sightseeing trips in the Arizona desert. Loring also was taking Geology courses with the local Junior College, and began imparting that knowledge to his son and his son's friends while on their outings in the desert and mountain country of SE Arizona, the Basin and Range country.

Rockhounding gave the desert jaunts with his son extra meaning. Identification of various kinds of rocks and geological formations soon were followed with explorations of the old turquoise mines and an education in the copper-related gemstones of turquoise, malachite, azurite and chrisocolla. Use of the Army's lapidary hobby shop led to cutting slabs of the stones, revealing hidden patterns, then cutting the stone slabs into cabochons enhancing the pattern intricacies.

What are cabochons without jewelry? Silver smithing classes followed and then Junior turned his cabochons into some jewelry pieces for his mother and sister. Then came wax carving and lost wax casting, running the full gamut of classes and skills available. In order to keep expenses down Windy located wholesale outlets which supplied him with components to assemble jewelry such as chains, pendants, findings, etc.

After two years, Junior decided it was time to move back with his mother and Windy was left with all sorts time, of jewelry skills and pieces of original jewelry building up, some pieces rather unique. He turned to the local flea market and soon established himself as a regular jewelry maker, attending almost every weekend. Sales increased, and soon Windy began his jewelry business, The Stonewerkes, Southwest Originals in Wood and Stone. He was attending weekend flea markets and Art in the Park and Craft shows all over Arizona to sell his products. And he built up a chain of 8 businesses in two states which also handled his jewelry on consignment.

Loring actually took his "rockhounding" hobby turned jewelry business a large step further. He subscribed to all the commercial and trade magazines as well, and then combined his talents as a photographer and as a writer, photographed his silver smithing and lapidary work, wrote photo-journalism articles on "how to" silver smithing projects and then sold them to the magazines.

Loring says "You never know when what you do as a hobby can end up being a very profitable business. Over the past 40 years I have had the rare pleasure of turning three hobbies into professions: photography, electronics and now rockhounding. And using other skills such as technical writing and typing in those endeavors. From humble beginnings-."

Loring Windblad has operated his own HBBs for nearly 40 years, is a published author and freelance writer. Loring has written grants, business plans and resumes that got the job done right. His latest HBB endeavor is http://www.organicgreens.us

Amber is a beautiful gift from mother nature. It comes in many different colors - yellow, orange, red, white, brown, green, blue and almost black. It may be transparent or clouded. Transparent tones range from pale to dark yellow, to yellow light brown. Cloudy amber comes in many colors.

Amber is fossilized resin of ancient trees that grew in "amber forests". Through various physical and chemical changes the resin becomes Amber. Amber is unique because it is able to preserve the organic tissues in it. It is very common to find pieces of plants and insects, trapped in amber making it extremely valuable to both collectors and the scientists. A beautiful and fascinating gem!

Amber is found in various parts of the world. The largest amber deposits are off the shores of the Baltic Sea. Baltic Amber is the most sought after and valuable for making amber jewelry.
Baltic Amber has been used for decorative items since prehistoric times. A Baltic amber amulet has even been found in Egyptian tombs . Amber was also very popular in ancient Rome during the reign of Neron when: jewelry, ornaments, amulets, and even dice were made from amber. During the Middle Ages, amber prayer beads were exported. From the 16th century into the 18th century item made from amber included jewelry, dishes, buttons, pipe mouth pieces, chess sets and a host of other fine products.

The majority of Baltic amber comes from a 400-square-mile area - the Samland Peninsula, now known as the Kaliningrad region. The Kaliningrad amber mine supplies 99% of the Baltic amber. Up until the 19th century amber was retrieved manually from the sea. During the latter part of the 19th century operations became much more sophisticated as they began dredging and mining for amber. Since then millions of pounds of Baltic amber have been mined.. A small town in the Kaliningrad region has the world's largest amber mine.
Amber has a special beauty in its ability for each piece to be truly original in nature and content. The downfall to amber is like anything organic it does not last forever. Baltic amber is known to have the longest life expectancy. Taking proper care of your amber will result in enjoyment for many years, sometimes thousands of years as seen with the recovery of jewels from the past.

Some important tips for caring for your amber:

Never store amber where it may rub against hard surfaces such as metal or other jewelry.
Do not expose amber to harsh chemicals such as soap, jewelry cleaners, perfumes, hair products.
Do not expose amber to direct sunshine or heat.
To clean your amber wash in lukewarm water. Use a soft cloth to wash and dry. To restore the shine polish with pure olive oil.
Treat your amber like any fine gem

Where amber with pride, add it to your jewelry wardrobe and be sure to make your fashion statement!

© Copyright Sher Matsen, All Rights Reserved.

The Race for Number Eight

Ted Bauer

In any type of normal world, the race for the No. 8 seed in either Conference wouldn't matter at all, save for adding some interest to the final third of the season. In the East, the No. 8 crew will probably draw the Miami Heat in round one, facing off against the inside-outside twosome of Shaq and D-Wade, who are poised to bring a big golden trophy to South Beach. It won't be pretty.

The picture's a bit different in the West, though --- the battle for the No. 8 slot is a tighter affair, and there's interest from close NBA watchers. Granted, the last team in draws either the Spurs or the Suns, and both are going to be hard to knock off. But --- let's say Steve Nash's injuries continue to nag at him. Let's also take into account that playoff basketball slows down and focuses on half-court sets. The Suns suddenly seem beatable, right? The Spurs are a bit tougher --- they thrive in half-court sets, and they're the definition of consistent.

Still, let's say the Lakers get the No. 8 seed --- a possibility we'll investigate. The Lake Show has reached 4 of the last 5 Finals --- granted, with a vastly different chemistry. But Kobe is still a rare player. Let's say Minnesota gets in just under the line --- they were the No. 1 seed last year, and possess arguably the league's most game-altering player in Kevin Garnett. And if the Nuggets --- a young, eccentric mix of quality players --- get the nod, they might have enough firepower to run a full series with either San Antonio or Phoenix.

Since the No. 8 seed in the West could, theoretically, knock off a potential No. 1, we decided to investigate who's most likely to come out as No. 8 in late April. We evaluated only the Lakers, T-Wolves, and Nuggets, because let's be honest --- as good as the Clippers have played this year, do you honestly see them anywhere near the NBA Playoffs? We thought so.

Each team is assigned 3 (highest), 2, or 1 (lowest) points in four different categories: Personnel, Coaching, Remaining Schedule, and Intangibles. Scientific, no?

Personnel:
The Lakers have Kobe, who is arguably the best player in the game. He's struggled without a presence in the middle (no offense to Chris Mihm), and there's serious strains on his image following the rape trial and tumultuous breakup of the championship run Lakers. Beyond Mr. Bryant, though, Los Angeles doesn't have much. Caron Butler was promising as a rookie, but hasn't done a ton since then. Lamar Odom is the second key to this team --- he needs to play at the level he's capable of playing at, and he hasn't been doing that. He goes in the tank more than Vince Carter claims he went in the tank in Canada, especially against higher-level foes.

The Timberwolves have an amazing team on paper. Garnett, the reigning MVP, can beat you every which way. Sam Cassell is an experienced, showstopper point guard, and Latrell Sprewell can still score in buckets. Wally World gets injured, sure, but he's got game. The problem is, the entire team has underachieved this year, which creates a need for big games from Trenton Hassell and others. That shouldn't be necessary given this squad, especially when Sprewell is playing for 14 million per (even though he's apparently below the poverty line).

The Nuggets are good all-around. We're still waiting for Camby to tear something, and Nene has been on the injured list since Valentine's Day. Carmelo Anthony has slumped a bit in his sophomore campaign, and he doesn't play defense much at all. Earl Boykins has become a star here, regularly pacing the team in scoring, and Andre Miller --- who must be with his 19th NBA team by now --- seems to have acquired the poise of a true floor general, leading this team pretty well on most nights. K-Mart has been energized by the recent hire of George Karl.

Points: Nuggets 3, T-Wolves 2, Lakers 1

Coaching:
Who's Frank Hamblen? He's not Rudy T. He's not Coach K. He's not Phil Jackson. In sum, he's probably not good enough.

Kevin McHale probably shouldn't have pulled the plug so soon on Flip Saunders. Saunders was a great coach, and a playoff upset this year would have re-invigorated his team. Now, McHale's got himself on the bench. Let's consider other 1980s Celtics as coaches --- ML Carr, Danny Ainge, Larry Bird. Moderate successes, yes, but are any still coaching? There's a reason why eventually, they all underachieved. Putting an underachiever with a group of underachievers probably isn't the best mix

George Karl is a savvy veteran coach. You can say all you want about his conspicuous lack of jewelry, but he's won 60 games twice. The Nuggets have never won 60 games. The Nuggets have been on fire since he got the job from Michael Cooper by way of Jeff Bzedlik, recently winning six in a row. Melo's game is more diverse, more guys are getting quality minutes, and the team seems to play with a confidence and unity previously lacking. Karl was the right addition here, even counting rumors that he might be looking to ship Anthony away for his fear of playing tight defense.

Points: Nuggets 3, T-Wolves 2, Lakers 1

Remaining Schedule:

The Lakers, who are 20-11 at Staples Center, play only 10 of their remaining 23 games at home. In addition, they go on a road trip next week which features games at Dallas, Washington, Philadelphia, Miami, and Indiana. They end the season with relative cream puffs Golden State and Portland, but play three consecutive games right before that against Phoenix, Sacramento, and Dallas. All of those games are at home, but are still tough draws.

The Timberwolves, only 17-14 at home this year, play only 9 of their remaining games at Target Center, and their last two home games are against Seattle (on pace for 59 wins) and San Antonio (on pace to win the West). In addition, they have road games at Phoenix, San Antonio, Los Angeles, Sacramento, and Dallas sprinkled throughout their final month and a half.

The Nuggets are 18-9 at Pepsi Center this year, and play 14 of their final 23 contests at home. In the final month, they do travel to Minneapolis, but they also get 2 games against the Hornets --- the worst team in the league --- and also play Portland and Golden State, both in the Mile High City. The Nuggets also draw the Grizzlies twice in the final three weeks. While the Grizz are playoff-bound themselves, it's a favorable match-up for a streaking Denver squad.

Points: Nuggets 3, Lakers 2, Timberwolves 1

Intangibles
Kobe needs to reach the playoffs as a No. 8 seed, score 50 points every night, and off the No. 1 team in the West. In some ways, it would help restore his credibility and erase notions he can't do it without Shaq. Also, it might help Frank Hamblen not become an assistant again next year.

The Timberwolves need to prove their 2003-2004 campaign was no joke, and some of their contract year players could benefit from the extra playing time and bigger stage of the playoffs.

The Nuggets are young, and aren't expected to do much besides make the playoffs. They have a determined team and a determined coach, but aside from Anthony keeping pace with LeBron (who's probably going to make the playoffs this year), the team doesn't have a ton to prove right now.

Points: Lakers 3, Timberwolves 2, Nuggets 1

The Final Score:
Nuggets 10, Timberwolves 7, Lakers 7

Karl's bunch is streaking, all right --- straight into a first-round date with the best of the West.

Ted Bauer writes for http://www.hoopsavenue.com

Raising Creative Grandchildren
Susan Stump

"Where did he come up with that?" Kids often amaze us with their imaginative ideas, and we should give ourselves a pat on the back for playing a role in this development. Innovative thinking is essential for success in school and in life, and it's our job as parents and grandparents to nurture our kids' innate desire to be creative. Inventive play fosters original thinking, an asset when children are confronted with new situations. By providing activities that use their creativity and imaginations, we are giving our young ones an important tool to deal with life down the road.

Give them ideas.
Children come up with things to do on their own, but we also need to provide them with new ideas of interesting activities. Think back to what you did as a kid. Did you write a diary, create elaborate puppet shows, or sing and dance for relatives? Share ideas from your own childhood experiences. Offer creative writing ideas like writing an episode for a favorite television show or writing a new ending to a favorite story. Craft projects offer another outlet for inspiring imaginations. Craft kits, especially those from Curiosity Kits and ALEX, offer a wide variety of unusual and fun projects. They've brought us a long way from the sock puppets of our youth. These manufacturers offer ideas and supplies to make such things as scrapbooks, powerballs, soaps, candy, sun catchers, dolls, planes, dinosaurs, jewelry treasures, and lots of decorative items. Kids can gather ideas from the instructions, and then give the projects their own unique touches.

Keep ideas fresh.
Pick up any parenting magazine and you'll find lots of ideas to get those creative juices flowing in your kids. Search the web and check out craft stores. Keep a journal or file for magazine clippings and ideas as you find them. Stockpile so that you'll know how to answer the whiny "I'm bored" call from the kids.

Give them freedom.
Once you've given the kids some suggestions and supplies, step back and see which they choose and where they go with them. This unstructured play time gives kids an opportunity to stretch their creative muscles. Watch as they incorporate your ideas and branch out on their own.

Set an example.
Chances are, if you are a creative person, your grandchild will be too. You display creativity in your everyday activities like when you reason with a disgruntled child, change lyrics to songs, and maybe even do some interpretive dancing to entertain a toddler. The children see your silliness and it rubs off on them. It's a great idea to point out to your kids how you use creativity in your daily life.

As parents and grandparents, we always try to do the very best for our kids and provide opportunities that will help them mature into intelligent, capable adults. Nurturing their creative spirits helps them along this road. With their well-developed imaginations, maybe they'll turn it into a yellow brick, pink polka-dotted road with sparkles!

Susan Stump is the mother of two children and the owner of ChildCrafter, Co. - Craft Kits and Subscriptions that Inspire a Child's Imagination. Knee-high shearling boots are very hot right now, but you can get a pair of shearling-like boots from stores like Aldo , Bakers, and even Nordstrom for well under $70. These boots look great with a pair of jeans tucked inside.

Ponchos are definitely not "in" anymore, but what is "in" is to take a wide/long pashmina-like scarf in a great color like green or pink (you can get these at pretty much any store), and draping it around your shoulders, much as you would wear a poncho. Fasten the two ends together at the shoulder with brooches. Brooches continue to rock, and stores like Express and Claire's Boutique have a wonderful assortment. Remember: The gaudier the brooch, the better! Wear three or so at the same time.

Another hot look, straight from the runways, is to wear black or camel from head to toe, with turquoise jewelry accents. So throw on a pair of black fitted pants, a nice long-sleeve black top, and turquoise jewelry. It is a good time to buy some turquoise, or turquoiselike, jewelry - because it will be VERY HOT this spring and summer.

Use these three simple winter looks to add excitement and color to your winter wardrobe.

Winter Looks on a Budget
Kathryn Finney

Here are some quick and easy winter looks on a budget.

There are several new looks you can pull off for a fraction of the usual cost. Procrastination and a lack of knowledge can be rewarded with overpaying for a piece of jewelry or even worse, being ripped-off.
A gift of jewelry can be expensive. Asking friends, family and co-workers if they can recommend a website, brick and mortar store or local crafts person can help. Checking with the better business bureau is also a commendable approach.
When you are shopping, ask the salesperson to write down any information you might rely on to make your purchase and before you buy, ask for the stores refund and return policy. When ordering online, keep printouts of the web pages with details about the transaction, including refund and return policies if youre not satisfied.
Six Smart Shopping Tips for Mothers Day and Beyond
1. Theres a big difference between 14 karat gold and gold-plated jewelry. Fourteen karat (14K) jewelry contains 14 parts of gold, mixed in throughout with 10 parts of base metal. Gold-plated describes jewelry with a layer of at least 10K gold bonded to a base metal. Gold plating eventually wears away, depending on how often the item is worn and how thick the plating is.
2. If youre buying a watch, determine whether you want one that runs on a battery or one that must be wound daily. Ask if a warranty or guarantee is included, how long it lasts, and what parts and repair problems it covers. Also ask how and where you can get the watch serviced and repaired.
3. Know the difference between laboratory-created gemstones and naturally mined stones. Stones created in the lab are visually identical to stones mined from the earth. The big difference is in the cost: laboratory-created stones are less expensive then naturally mined stones. But because they look must like stones mined from the earth, they must be identified as lab-created. If you want a naturally mined stone, ask if it has been treated. Gemstone treatments such as heating, dyeing or bleaching can improve a stones appearance or durability. Some treatments are permanent; some may create special care requirements. Treatments also may affect the stones value.
4. Ask whether pearls are imitation or real. Real pearls are made by oysters or other mollusks; imitation pearls are man-made. Cultured pearls are made by mollusks with human intervention; and irritant introduced into their shells causes a pearl to grow. Real pearls that are not cultured are fairly rare and expensive. The cost depends on the size, usually stated in millimeters, and the coating or nacre on a real pearl, which gives it its iridescence.
5. When youre buying a diamond, consider four criteria: cut, color, clarity and weight, usually stated as carats. Each factor affects the price. Color is sometimes graded on a scale. However, scales are not uniform: a D may be the best color for one scale, but not for another. Make sure you know how a particular scale and grade represent the color of the diamond youre considering. A diamond can be described as flawless only if it has no visible surface cracks or other imperfections when viewed under 10-power magnification by a skilled diamond grader.
6. One final tip, Moms love longer (i.e. 24") gold or sterling chains with gemstone pendants. And you can almost never go wrong with the very popular omega-style chains in various widths in sterling silver or gold.

Buying Jewelry for Mothers Day or How To Buy The Perfect Gift for Mom Without Getting Ripped Off
Sam Serio

Jewelry can be the perfect gift for mom on Mothers Day, but there are pitfalls, especially if you rush at the last minute.
